What is Bariatric Surgery?
Reserved only for significantly obese patients, bariatric surgery is not just a weight-loss surgery – it is a life-saving surgery for the thousands who undergo it every year. The most common form of bariatric surgery, gastric bypass, or Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, is permanent, while the second most common, the adjustable gastric band procedure, can be reversed. We also now offer the Gastric Sleeve, which shrinks stomach size without bypassing or stapling the intestine. All three of these procedures are effective and can be performed safely.
Laparoscopic bariatric surgery – the preferred method
Far less invasive than traditional surgery, advanced laparoscopic technology allows the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the adjustable band and the gastric sleeve procedures to be performed through several small “keyhole” incisions. This kind of gastric bypass surgery results in less scarring, less pain, fewer wound complications, faster recovery and a shorter hospital stay. Nearly all of the operations at Fresh Start Bariatrics are performed using these minimally invasive techniques.
Pros and Cons of the Three Bariatric Operations
All three bariatric surgeries and procedures are safe and effective surgical approaches to high quality, sustainable weight loss but each operation has unique risks and benefits. Please examine this chart and bring your questions to our free Fresh Start Bariatrics Seminar.
